Field trips are essential to providing youth with applicable skills and hands-on experience with community projects and initiatives. A majority of the work days are spent outside in the beautiful Richmond weather, where the youth get down and dirty with tackling environmental issues!
Although Chevron refinery is operating within the city, residents should not be excluded from having basic human rights such as clean air and water. Richmond Trees, a volunteer grassroots group, came in yesterday to teach us the importance of trees and tree maintenance within the city. The Ma’at Youth Academy participated in a tree planting event hosted by Richmond Trees. Over 20 trees were planted by community members dedicated to improve the health of our city. Trees are beneficial to communities because they remove carbon dioxide from the air and replace it with oxygen. They also reduce air pollution and provide a habitat for wildlife. On Saturday me Alma, Brittany, Paul went to Contra Costa College to work with some other people to work on the garden they come out to at the college. In the city of Richmond California there are trashy environments, and I took some time to take some pictures at the Nevin Center in Central Richmond where there was trash on the ground scattered around the playground area and even out of the area.
