Welcome to Ma'at Youth Academy
The Ma’at Youth Academy is an environmental organization committed to the rights of youth to safe, healthy, diverse and rewarding environments, and to their capacity to achieve these conditions themselves. We believe that youth are often best-positioned to do the legwork required for real change. MYA links low-income and at-risk youth of color with the educational, social and cultural opportunities that empower them to combat environmental and economic injustices. Alumni of the program have moved into jobs at other nonprofits, colleges and universities, and health and environmental professions.
MYA was one of ten recipients to receive the 1999 National Environmental Education and Training Foundation’s Achievement Award given to innovative and effective environmental education programs in the U.S. that are preparing students to understand, address, and advocate for urgent environmental challenges.
Mission
To improve public and environmental health in urban areas by developing and modeling multicultural environmental education, promoting economic opportunities for youth and increasing community involvement in environmental protection.
Ultimately, MYA’s seek to create a system of community monitors to minimize human exposure to environmental hazards to preserve good health in communities of color and low-income areas through research, public education and community organizing, especially as it applies to children and youth.
